No Doctors moved from Chicago to Oakland/SF in 2004. I had a mixed reaction to early shows of theirs. Longtime champion Weasel Walter said something to the effect of “you will see them 3 times and hate them and then love them the fourth time.” A more backhanded, or accurate, endorsement would be hard to conjure up for any other band, but in this case it may be deserved. Self-releasing all manner of noise-boogie since 2002 and collaborating with infamous Minneapolis guru Matt St Germain’s Freedom From, No Doctors have transitioned from a splatter-core blooze mess into something cleaner and altogether more bizarre. A jam band weaned on Royal Trux, a campfire prank on “panic rock”, a stoner-frat-brohemian Bobby Conn, or just four dudes (figurehead/spiritual advisor Clopes only appears in cartoon icon form here) highly dedicated to making the “rawk”est shit they can fathom. It’s not for everyone, but what is?
Self-released as an LP with CD packaged together, Origin and Tectonics has received little fanfare beyond experimental oracle Blastitude, which is already predisposed to this brand of chicanery. As difficult as it is to put a finger on just where these boys are coming from, its practical result is (if not the real thing) a valiant simulation of feel-good post-punk guitar heroics.
